Sex and Intimacy: Movin' On Up! | York's RED Zone

Making the Transition from High School to University

Confused studentLet?s be honest: high school is a really awkward time for most people. Between going through the final stages of puberty, suffering through the dreaded ?talk? with your parents, and trying to figure out what to do with the rest of your life, this period is basically just a series of?weird? uncomfortable encounters. This can make it really difficult to explore your sexuality, to learn about dating, and to develop intimate relationships. This was certainly the case for me.

?Then I came to York, and EVERYTHING changed. Even though I was moving out a small school in a small town to one of the biggest universities in Canada, I felt much more confident with who I was and what I wanted. And this feeling was reflected in my peers. This made it a lot easier to enter into relationships and test the waters of sexuality. And, well, let?s just say I dove headfirst into that pool. Of course, I always made sure to have my water wings and pool noodle with me. (Hint: not actual pool toys?though one was made of latex and kept me safer, and the other was?well?never mind).

There were a few reasons for this change in atmosphere. One huge contributor to my Spongebob: Sex, yaynew found hobby was that I attended Frosh Week, during which I met some amazing people, many of whom I still see. The entire experience was so energetic and exciting that it was easy to make friends and meet potential partners. As well, everything was so sex-positive! We had seminars on dating and intimacy, presentations about safer sex, and the taboo that surrounded the topic in high school was totally eliminated! After a night of Dirty Bingo at Winters, it?s hard to feel awkward talking about sex.

Another huge factor was that I was living away from home and in residence. I no longer had a curfew, and I didn?t have to ask my parents if I could have ?friends? over for a ?sleepover.? This made it much easier to have partners over for the night; I can tell you that signing someone into your residence is much easier than sneaking them into your second-floor bedroom window. True story.

Colourful condomsAnother difference was the availability of condoms; they were everywhere! In high school, you had to make a trip to the nurse?s office and, through a deep crimson blush, mumble that you wanted condoms. Or, worse yet, you could head to a convenience store to pick some up, and stare at the floor as one of your classmates cashed you out. AWK-WARD! At York, however, it?s hard to turn a corner without condoms being there. In our Frosh kits, in our dons? rooms, at the front desk of the residence, and (shameless promotion) at Health Education! I could get as many as I wanted, when I wanted, without any awkward encounters. Hallelujah!

I guess the main message of this post is that things change during University, and the whole thing is set up as a perfect time to explore your sexuality and learn about dating, relationships, and intimacy. So be safe, be prepared, and have fun!

Hankook Tires Are Built With Expensive Quality For Affordable Pricing

Hankook tires are well renowned for excellent performance and efficiency, tailored to nearly every vehicle that requires wheels- such automobiles include cars, trucks, buses, campers, ATV's, SUV's, and even racing. What many people do not realize is the fact that countless discount dealers exist across the nations to provide cheaper prices for the same quality name; although pricing is already affordable through the manufacturer, outside retailers also offer further protection in warranties and guarantees, especially in shipping and handling. Consumers that take advantage of these ingenious services may have their tires delivered to any location, often times for free shipping under revolving promotions, and many provide the option of delivery to an affiliate shop for installment. Hankook tires are possibly the most accommodating, innovative tires on the market for their wide variety and valuable features.

The HankookOptimoH727 is consumer rated number one all-season budget tires in recent surveys. With factories in 185 countries, Hankook places high emphasis on research and development procedures to stay ahead of the competition and keep customers pleased. Thanks to 'Kontrol Technology,' four key aspects are instilled into all tires, embracing safety, comfort, performance and environment.

Many specifications of tires exist to support a broad spectrum of clients and needs, including not only travel intent but weather as well. Winter tires, designed for SUV's and other passenger cars, are enhanced with superior traction for safe voyaging on ice, snow, and slush, for superior protection in times of need. Touring, Luxury Performance, and Ultra High Performance are all enhancements for compact and passenger cars, while larger, off road vehicles are armed with mud and all-terrain tires. These tires are built with superior sidewalls for added stability and guard against puncture and slashing, as off road sites can be hazardous and unexpected issues can lie around every bend. Racing tires are also available lines of product from Hankook, that are not only D.O.T. compliant but offer better handling at higher speeds as well as better traction for safety.

Warranties are another issue that can be very important to consumers in a variety of situations. Often times, these other companies as well as the manufacturer will provide safety tips and guidelines for the proper care of tires after purchase, so no warranties are voided. Low tire pressure is probably the worst condition for any tire to find itself in, as tread is worn quicker and the life of the tire greatly decreases- information like this is available for all consumers, so circumstances won't develop that they may not be able to get help with under warranty.

Check into your perfect set of Hankook tires today. Virtually every vehicle and any purpose can be protected through one design or the other offered from this company. Affordable and efficient, these tires are perfect selections for anybody.

All other factual evidence is found in abundance at Hankook tires. More facts can be found at Hankook Optimo H418, where you will be able to broaden your range on the subject.

5 reasons GOP insiders are quietly panicking over Paul Ryan

When Republican talking heads praise Mitt Romney for his "bold" VP choice, says Politico, try to read the fear between the lines

Republican political professionals have been dutifully, even enthusiastically, singing the praises of Rep. Paul Ryan's (R-Wis.) and the man, Mitt Romney, who boldly tapped Ryan as his running mate, say Alexander Burns, Maggie Haberman, and Jonathan Martin at Politico. Well, "don't buy it." Once you get them off the record, there's "an unmistakable consensus" among Republican insiders that Ryan poses an unnecessary, possibly fatal risk for Romney. Here are five reasons the pros who run Republican elections are quietly panicking over Romney's VP pick:

1. Ryan embodies the most unpopular GOP policies
The "good news" about Romney tapping Ryan is that "this ticket now has a vision," one GOP strategist tells Politico. "The bad news is that vision is basically just a chart of numbers used to justify policies that are extremely unpopular." Romney now owns Ryan's plans to voucherize Medicare for anyone under 55, privatize Social Security, zero out most taxes for rich investors like Romney, and criminalize not only all abortion but maybe even in-vitro fertilization ? all political losers... and relatively mainstream GOP positions, says Laura Clawson at Daily Kos. "What's especially fun about the Ryan choice is that he's a problem for Republicans because he is the embodiment of their policies."

2. He alienates more voters than he entices
Lots of conservatives are very excited and energized by the Ryan pick ? "Rush Limbaugh and Rupert Murdoch appear ecstatic about his elevation," says Howard Kurtz at The Daily Beast. But the House GOP budget wonk also "has a long paper trail that could alienate moderate swing voters." Ryan's Medicare plan alone poses special dangers for Romney in senior-rich Florida, a must-win state. And Florida has another group Romney just threw out by tapping Ryan: Jews, says Peter Beinart at?The Daily Beast. The GOP's big push to siphon off Jewish voters might have worked if Romney had stuck with his earlier fiscal and social moderation, "but any trace of that Romney died when he chose Ryan. The race for the American Jewish vote is now probably over," and Obama won by default.?

3. Americans hate Congress, and Ryan ties Romney to it
Before picking Ryan, "Romney had run an outsider campaign and kept a healthy distance from a historically unpopular Congress," says Russell Berman at?The Hill. Now, he's "tied inextricably to congressional Republicans." We don't know yet "whether voters' disdain for Congress will in any way rub off on their assessments of Ryan," says Gallup pollster Frank Newport. But it can't be good for Team Romney that in the latest Gallup poll, a historically low 10 percent approve of Congress, versus 83 percent who disapprove.

4. Ryan makes some tough congressional races even tougher
There are two groups of Republican operatives anonymously trashing Ryan, says Steve Benen at The Maddow Blog: One faction fears he will help lead Romney to defeat and the other "believe[s] Ryan will hurt the party up and down the ballot." GOP House and Senate candidates, especially those in tight races, just "don't know how to run with the 'kill Medicare' guy near the top of the ballot," and many of them are conspicuously distancing themselves from Ryan. As one top GOP consultant tells Politico, the addition of Ryan is "very not helpful down ballot ? very."

5. "GOP pros" are just known to panic for no good reason?
This type of off-record griping is "an ancient Washington game" among political operatives, says Rick Moran at?American Thinker. "The 'I told you so' pros" won't get stung if Romney wins, and if he loses they can "point at this piece ? and others like it down the road ? and claim prescience." In fact, "I'm reassured ? indeed, encouraged ? indeed, buoyed!" by the GOP hacks trash-talking Ryan, says William Kristol at?The Weekly Standard. The "pseudo-sophisticated conventional wisdom" from these cowards is "a terrific contrarian indicator" of the state of the race: "When 'GOP pros' are most full of fear and apprehension about Republican prospects ? for example, Reagan in 1980, Gingrich in 1994, and the Tea Party in 2010 ? Republicans tend to do well."

(AP) ? Usain Bolt made himself a living legend ? just ask him. Michael Phelps swam a last lap into history. A man ran on carbon blades. Two track stars and a long jumper produced perhaps the greatest night in British sports history.

Take a victory lap, London.

The nightmare that was supposed to be the 2012 Olympics ? gridlock and chaos Underground and overground, a city locked down by terrorist threats, day after day of gray and drizzle ? simply never materialized.

Instead, London threw a five-ring party.

"Nobody wanted to sit this dance out," said Sebastian Coe, the two-time Olympic 1,500-meter champion and chief of the London organizing committee. "Everybody has wanted to be involved."

Or, as the stately Economist said: "Britain looked at itself and liked what it saw."

The games were not without controversy. Eight badminton players were sent home in disgrace for trying to lose ? doing it to gain a better draw in their tournament, but violating the Olympic spirit of competition.

Organizers scrambled to sell last-minute tickets, and ended up giving some to the military, after unsightly photos of empty seats were splashed across the famously cantankerous British press.

Some moments were downright ugly. A Greek triple jumper made a racist joke on Twitter. A Swiss soccer used a slur to describe the South Koreans who had just won, and said that they "can go burn."

At what were called the first social media Olympics, both remarks made it around the world in seconds. The punishment came almost as quickly: Go home.

The athletes who misbehaved were drowned out anyway. Tens of thousands of people flocked daily into Olympic Park. They filled Olympic stadium for morning heats. They gave the handball arena a new name: The Box That Rocks.

They camped out on the grass to watch the action on big screens. Flags ? the Union Jack most prominently ? became shirts and shorts, caps and capes, earrings and nail polish. Fans wore their national colors proudly, and literally.

And what a show they saw.

Bolt, the Jamaican track sensation, blew away the field in the 100 meters in 9.63 seconds and the 200 in 19.32, becoming the first athlete to win both sprints at consecutive Olympics.

He was so dominant that sometimes the question was not just whether he would win but whether he would run at full speed to the finish line ? and what theatrics he would produce to celebrate.

He did pushups on the track. He struck the pose of an ancient, triumphant Olympian, or perhaps a superhero.

"I am now a living legend," he said. "Bask in my glory."

Bolt struck a third time on the next-to-last night of the games, running a blistering anchor leg to set a world record in the 4x100 relay for his third gold. He was so good that track officials let him keep the baton.

Elsewhere on the track, Kenya's David Rudisha led for the entire race in the 800 meters and broke his own world record by a tenth of a second. The standout performance of the games, proclaimed no less a track star than Coe himself.

Carmelita Jeter anchored the American 4x100-meter relay team to a winning time of 40.82 seconds, more than half a second better than a mark that had stood for more than a quarter-century.

The United States used a dominant showing in track and field to blow past China and lock up the races for total medals and for golds. Going into the final day, the United States had 44 gold medals, one shy of its record for an Olympics on foreign soil.

In the pool alone, they won 31 medals. And Michael Phelps, in a dazzling farewell, became the most decorated Olympian of all time. He came away with four golds and six overall to eclipse not just his contemporary rival, Ryan Lochte, but Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina, who held the previous record for most Olympic medals, with 18.

Phelps has 18 golds alone to show for his career, and 22 overall medals.

He left just as another American swimmer, 17-year-old Missy Franklin, was stepping into the spotlight. She captured four golds, equaling the U.S. mark for a female swimmer.

She was only one star at a breakout Olympics for women.

Gabby Douglas, the 16-year-old American gymnast, won two gold medals, including the all-around ? and got to meet Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, to boot. Six women's world records were set in the pool.

Alex Morgan scored a late header that sent the U.S. women's soccer team to a semifinal victory against Canada and propelled them to an eventual gold. Serena Williams won golds in women's singles and in women's doubles with sister Venus.

Women's boxing made its debut, and was a huge hit. Britain's Nicola Adams, Ireland's Katie Taylor and U.S. teen Claressa Shields became stars in their gold-medal bouts.

Kerri Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor did what they always do ? own the sand. They won their third straight gold in beach volleyball and did it at perhaps the best setting of the games ? within a long serve of 10 Downing St.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Brunei sent female Olympians for the first time. Saudi judo fighter Wojdan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhani lost, in a headscarf and in less than 90 seconds. But she drew an ovation and made a statement just by being here.

So did Oscar Pistorius, the double-amputee from South Africa with carbon-fiber blades who ran both the 400 and the 4x400 relay. He reached the semifinals in the 400 and ran anchor on the relay team that finished last in the final. Nobody minded.

"When I left the stadium last night I just turned around and looked at the crowd, and it's something I will definitely remember for the rest of my life," Pistorius said.

By the tens of thousands, Londoners shared the sentiment. For the host nation, a cast of athletes cemented their place in British lore.

Bradley Wiggins followed up his victory in the Tour de France with gold in the time trial and became the most decorated British Olympian. Track cyclist Chris Hoy won his sixth career gold. Ben Ainslie sailed to his fourth.

Andy Murray finally won a title at Wimbledon, thrashing Roger Federer in straight sets on Centre Court ? just a month after losing to him in the Wimbledon final.

Britain piled up 28 gold medals and will finish third in the table. Not since another London Games, in 1908, has Britain performed so well.

It peaked on a Saturday night, when Britain won three gold medals in track and field in less than an hour ? Jessica Ennis in heptathlon, Mo Farah in the 10,000 meters and Greg Rutherford in long jump ? to a deafening roar inside Olympic Stadium.

The reserved president of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge, made no secret of his delight at it all.

"For two weeks," he said, "the Olympic Park has been the beating heart of the world."

Rogge will deliver his final verdict during Sunday's closing ceremony, when the Olympic flame will be extinguished and the Olympic flag handed over to Brazilian organizers of the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Normally reserved Britons embraced, put down their newspapers and spoke to each other on the Tube, and reveled in sports like never before.

"The doom mongers said it couldn't be done," said London Mayor Boris Johnson, who was responsible for one of the few mishaps of the games ? getting himself stuck on a zip line.

"Well, they were wrong," he said. "It was done, it was stunning, and it will live long in the memory."

The cycling road race blazed by Buckingham Palace. The race walk went by, too, with considerably lower speed but no less enthusiasm. The marathon, on Sunday, will finish nearby.

And perhaps appropriately, these games will mark a changing of the guard.

Phelps is going into retirement. Bolt has hinted he won't be back in 2016. An American basketball team stacked with superstars toyed with its opponents and was playing for gold on Sunday, but NBA stars may be sidelined if the Olympic basketball tournament adopts an under-23 age rule like soccer.

After three-time host London, the Olympics will move to new territory ? Sochi, Russia, for the 2014 Winter Games; Rio in 2016; and Pyeongchang, South Korea, for the 2018 Winter Games.

London spent about $14.5 billion in public money on its Olympics. The project has regenerated East London, and organizers have pledged a long-term legacy with no white elephants.

For now, though, no one in London is worried about that. It's been a jolly good show.

Syria army claims control of Aleppo rebel redoubt

Syria said its troops seized a rebel-held Aleppo district on Wednesday after storming it and "annihilating" most of the insurgents, as a long-threatened ground assault on the key city was launched.

The rebels promptly denied the claim, acknowledging that a "barbaric and savage attack" on the neighbourhood of Salaheddin was under way but later saying they had recaptured much of what they lost.

The offensive came as Amnesty International raised concerns about the plight of civilians in Syria's commercial capital and warned both sides they would be held accountable for attacks on residential areas.

Early in the afternoon, state news agency SANA said "our brave armed forces have taken full control of the district of Salaheddin" and "inflicted heavy losses on groups of armed terrorists, killing or wounding a large number of them."

Dozens of rebels were captured, including foreigners, and others surrendered, SANA said. It said troops seized a large number of arms.

State television said the "armed forces dealt violent blows to the mercenary terrorists" in Salaheddin, "annihilating most of the terrorists."

But rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) spokesman Colonel Abdel Jabbar al-Oqaidi said: "It is not true the regime army has seized control of the district.

"It is true that there is a barbaric and savage attack," he told AFP via Skype. "They are using all the weapons at their disposal to attack Salaheddin, including fighter jets, tanks and mortars."

He said there was fighting in many districts, but it was concentrated on Salaheddin because of the "great symbolic value for us and the army."

Hours later, rebel commander Wassel Ayub said the FSA had launched a counter-attack and retaken part of Salaheddin.

"For an hour and a half, the Free Syrian Army has staged a counter-attack and reclaimed three streets out of five seized by regime forces," he told AFP by telephone.

"We staged our counter-attack after 700 fighters arrived from the southern neighbourhood of Sukkari, Bustan al-Qasr, Shaar and Hanano" in the east, said Ayub, who heads the Nur al-Haq Brigade.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights likewise said the rebels were making gains.

"Clashes also raged in Aleppo's Al-Midan district as rebels tried to seize" an air force security bureau, the Britain-based watchdog said.

At least 37 people were killed in Aleppo -- 17 civilians, 10 rebels and 10 soldiers -- from a total of at least 162 nationwide, it said.

"I believe the real number is much higher but it is impossible to document the figures because of the ferocity of the clashes" in Aleppo, Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman said.

A total of 225 people -- mostly civilians -- died in Syria on Tuesday, one of the worst days for casualties in the nearly 17-month uprising the Observatory said last week has cost more than 21,000 lives.

-- Use of heavy weapons --

--------------------------

Amnesty showed satellite images indicating an apparent increased use of heavy weapons in the Aleppo area, and warned forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad and rebels that attacks on civilians would not go unpunished.

"Amnesty International is sending a clear message to both sides in the fighting: any attacks against civilians will be clearly documented so that those responsible can be held accountable," Amnesty's Christoph Koettl said.

The London-based watchdog said images from Anadan, a small town near Aleppo, revealed more than 600 probable artillery impact craters from the fierce fighting over the city.

It said a July 31 image showed what seemed to be impact craters next to what appeared to be a residential housing complex in Anadan.

Amnesty said it was concerned the deployment of heavy weaponry in residential areas would lead to further human rights abuses and breaches of international law.

On Tuesday, Assad vowed to crush the rebellion that erupted in March 2011.

"The Syrian people and their government are determined to purge the country of terrorists and to fight the terrorists without respite," he was quoted by SANA as telling a visiting Iranian envoy, using his regime's terminology for rebels.

Assad earlier appeared on television for the first time in more than two weeks in greeting Saeed Jalili, a top aide to Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Jalili said Tehran would "never allow the resistance axis -- of which Syria is an essential pillar -- to break.

"What is happening in Syria is not an internal issue but a conflict between the axis of resistance on the one hand, and the regional and global enemies of this axis on the other," he said.

On Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi acknowledged that retired members of the Revolutionary Guards and army were among 48 Iranians taken hostage in Syria by rebels.

"A number of the (hostages) are retired members of the Guards and the army. Some others were from other ministries," Salehi was quoted as telling reporters as he flew back from Turkey, which he asked for help in freeing the Iranians.

It was the first time Tehran admitted any of those abducted had a connection to its military, having previously insisted the 48 were pilgrims.

On Tuesday, Jordan's King Abdullah II said Assad might make a "worst case scenario" retreat to an Alawite stronghold if he falls.

"I have a feeling that if he can't rule Greater Syria, then maybe an Alawi enclave is Plan B," Abdullah told US television network CBS.

"That means that everybody starts land grabbing which makes no sense to me. If Syria then implodes on itself that would create problems that would take decades for us to come back from."

O's rally from 5-0 deficit, beat M's in 14

BALTIMORE (AP) - The Baltimore Orioles have developed a knack for winning extra-inning games - especially long ones.

Adam Jones singled home the winning run in the 14th inning and Baltimore beat the Seattle Mariners 8-7 Tuesday night after rallying from a five-run deficit.

It was the 12th straight win in extra innings for the Orioles, who have played five games of at least 13 innings and won them all.

"You know, it's not a team that's sitting there going, `Woe is me. Let's get this over.' They grind it," manager Buck Showalter said. "They put in so much effort."

Matt Wieters homered twice, J.J. Hardy contributed a pivotal three-run drive and Nick Markakis had four hits for the Orioles, who trailed 5-0 in the second inning and 7-2 in the sixth.

Once the game got past the ninth, it was Baltimore's time.

Asked to explain the phenomenon, Wieters said, "I don't know if anybody can give you an exact answer other than (we) just keep playing. There is no quit in this team. We know with our bullpen, they keep putting up zeros and eventually somebody's got to score."

It happened in the 14th, when the Orioles put an end to a marathon that lasted 5 minutes short of five hours.

Omar Quintanilla led off against Shawn Kelley (2-3) by hitting a grounder to second baseman Dustin Ackley, who made a great stop before throwing to first baseman Mike Carp. Umpire Brian Knight ruled Carp took his foot off the bag while stretching for the throw, and Mariners manager Eric Wedge was ejected for arguing the call.

Markakis followed with a single, Hardy sacrificed and an intentional walk loaded the bases. Jones then hit an opposite-field liner to right that glanced off the glove of Casper Wells, allowing Quintanilla to score.

Afterward, Wedge and Carp were still fuming.

"He was out," Wedge said. "He didn't even come close to coming off the bag. It was evident that he was on there, and noticeably so, and it's just a shame that he has to make that call right there and cost us the ballgame."

Carp added: "I've got nothing to say that's worth saying. You guys saw it, the whole world saw it. I hope someone has the decency to say something about it."

Darren O'Day (6-0), the seventh Baltimore pitcher, worked two innings.

It was the fourth straight victory for the Orioles, who moved eight games over .500 (59-51) for the first time since June 29. Baltimore has won 11 straight one-run games.

Kyle Seager and Miguel Olivo homered for the Mariners, who have lost four of five following a seven-game winning streak. Seattle finished with 18 hits but did not score after the sixth inning.

"The bullpen was the difference," Showalter said.

Wieters launched Baltimore's comeback with his second homer of the night, a sixth-inning drive that made it 7-3.

Mark Reynolds chased starter Blake Beavan in the seventh with a leadoff double, and Lucas Luetge promptly gave up an RBI single to Quintanilla. Markakis followed with an infield hit before Hardy sent an 0-1 pitch into the left-field seats to erase a lead the Mariners held from the top of the first.

That ruined Beavan's bid to win a fifth straight start, a streak that began with his recall from Triple-A Tacoma on July 17.

Orioles starter Zach Britton gave up seven runs, four earned, and eight hits in five-plus innings. Despite the poor pitching line, the left-hander lowered his ERA to 8.10.

After the game, he was sent down to the minors.

The Mariners jumped in front with three unearned runs in the first. After Britton fumbled a dribbler by Ackley, Jesus Montero was credited with a two-out hit when Wilson Betemit couldn't handle his hard grounder to third. Seager followed with his team-high 12th home run, the first in 19 games since July 18.

Seattle made it 5-0 in the second. After Olivo hit a solo homer, three straight singles - the last by Trayvon Robinson - produced another run.

In the bottom half, Wieters homered on a 3-2 pitch and Markakis added a two-out RBI single.

The Mariners went up 7-2 in the sixth when Wells tripled and scored on a single by Carp, who came home on a single by Ackley.

NOTES: The Orioles optioned Britton to Triple-A Norfolk and recalled RHP Steve Johnson, who will start Wednesday night. Former Orioles right-hander Kevin Millwood will pitch for Seattle. ... Seager leads the majors with 39 two-out RBIs. .... It was Wieters' third career multihomer game, the second this season. ... Seattle's Michael Saunders went 0 for 7 with four strikeouts.

AdWatch: Democrats' ad hits Romney on Bain past

WASHINGTON (AP) ? TITLE: "Understands"

LENGTH: 60 seconds.

AIRING: On television in Iowa, Ohio, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Florida, and on the Web.

KEY IMAGES: Joe Soptic, a grim-faced former Kansas City steelworker is shown in close-up, talking about how the 2001 shuttering of GST Steel affected his family. The steel firm had been taken over in 1993 by a group of partners including Bain Capital, the private equity firm run by GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney. As the screen alternates between Soptic, shots of the vacant GST Steel plant rung by barbed wire and a photo of Romney at a conference table, Soptic links Romney and Bain to the cancer death of his wife.

"When Mitt Romney and Bain closed the plant, I lost my health care, and my family lost their health care.?And a short time after that my wife became ill. I don't know how long she was sick and I think maybe she didn't say anything because she knew that we couldn't afford the insurance, and then one day she became ill and I took her up to the Jackson County Hospital and admitted her for pneumonia and that's when they found the cancer and by then it was stage 4. It was, there was nothing they could do for her. And she passed away in 22 days. I do not think Mitt Romney realizes what he's done to anyone, and furthermore I do not think Mitt Romney is concerned."

ANALYSIS: The latest ad by the pro-Obama Priorities USA Action super political action committee, part of a $20 million campaign, is the most intense negative media attack yet on Romney for his 15-year stewardship of the Bain Capital private equity firm and the layoffs that sometimes resulted from the firm's cost-cutting at its takeover targets.

Soptic's conclusion that Romney bears some blame in his wife's death is not backed up factually in the ad. She died in 2006, five years after the plant closed, a fact the ad doesn't disclose. Determining Romney's role in the plant's closing is difficult but also not addressed in the ad.

Romney campaign spokesman Ryan Williams did not mention Soptic in his response, instead saying that "President Obama's allies continue to use discredited and dishonest attacks in a contemptible effort to conceal the administration's deplorable economic record."

Bain Capital and Romney's culpability is not crystal-clear in the closing of GST Steel. Romney was CEO of Bain when the firm became a majority shareholder in GST Steel in October 1993. Bain was not the only stakeholder; a group of the firm's executives and several other firms also had stakes. Bain put up about $8 million in the $75 million deal. Over the next eight years, Bain held onto its stakes and bought more investments as the steel company grew, merged with a South Carolina steelmaker, modernized and added millions of dollars in debt.

When the firm declared bankruptcy in February 2001 and shut down the Kansas City plant, Soptic and 750 other workers learned that their health care coverage, pensions and other benefits guaranteed by the company were rescinded.

Romney had left Bain Capital in February 1999 to lead preparations for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. His campaign has argued that he was no longer in day-to-day control of the firm. A recent Associated Press Fact Check found that Romney had retreated from his managerial responsibilities between 1999 and 2002, but still retained his official role as Bain's founder and chief executive.

Alleged gunman in Sikh temple shooting ID'd as Army vet

Authorities have identified the alleged gunman in the deadly shooting at a Wisconsin Sikh temple as Wade Michael Page, an Army veteran who may have ties to white supremacist groups. NBCNews.com's Pete Williams reports.

By NBC News staff

Updated at 4:05 p.m. ET: The alleged gunman in Sunday?s deadly shooting at a Sikh temple in southern Wisconsin is Wade Michael Page, an Army veteran who may have ties to white supremacist groups, authorities announced on Monday.

Page, who served in the Army from April 1992 through October 1998, allegedly killed six people at the temple and wounded four, including a police officer, before he was shot and killed by police. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, Page is the former leader of a neo-Nazi music group called End Apathy. ?

At a press conference, law-enforcement officials said Page was the only shooter.

"All of us are heartbroken" by the shootings, President Barack Obama said Monday.?If it turns out, Obama said, that the gunman was motivated by the ethnicity of those at the temple, the American people would recoil against that type of attitude.

Police say Page, 40, legally purchased the 9mm semi-automatic handgun?used in the shooting within the past 10 days near his home. The gun was recovered at the scene at the attack.

A police officer called to the scene shot Page dead before he could fire on more worshippers as they prepared for Sunday services at the temple in the suburb of Oak Creek, south of Milwaukee.?

Five men and one woman were killed. They were identified Monday as?Sita Singh, 41; Ranjit Singh, 49; Satwant Singh Kaleka, 65; Prakash Singh, 39, Paramjit Kaur (female), 41; and Suveg Singh, 84.

In addition to the wounded officer, three other people, whose names have not been released, were injured. Edwards said two of them were in critical condition at a hospital, and one was treated and released for a minor wound.

At a news conference Monday, authorities said they have not determined a motive for the killings.

"We are investigating it as a possible act of domestic terrorism,"?FBI Special Agent in Charge Teresa Carlson said. She?defined?domestic terrorism as "use of force or violence for social or political gain."

Carlson said there is no reason to believe anyone else was involved in the shooting. She said, however, they were pursuing one "person of interest," an unidentified white man wearing a dark T-shirt and sunglasses whose photo she held up during the press conference.?A law enforcement source later told NBC News that the man in the picture had been located, interviewed and ruled out in connection the shooting.?

Edwards said police received the initial call about the attack at 10:25 a.m. Sunday, and officers arrived on scene within minutes.

Among the first to arrive was Lt. Brian Murphy, who was ambushed when he stopped to help a victim. Murphy was shot eight to nine times with a handgun at close range, Edwards said at Monday's press conference. He was wearing a bullet-proof vest, but was hit in his extremities and suffered a serious wound in his neck.

Sikhs reel after 'senseless' attack: We're not 'Taliban'

When other officers arrived to the scene, they saw the suspect walking and commanded him to drop his weapons, Edwards said. At that point, the suspect fired at police, hitting two vehicles. An officer returned fire with a squad rifle and took him down, according to Edwards.

As officers went to check on Murphy, 51, who has been with the Oak Creek Police Department for 21 years, he waved them off, signaling they should go into the temple and help other victims. Following protocol, officers secured the exterior and helped Murphy, who was rushed to the hospital, before they went into the temple. Murphy remains in critical condition.

NBC's John Yang reports from Oak Creek, Wisc., where a white, male Army veteran is the suspected gunman in a deadly shooting at a Sikh temple.

More on the suspect
U.S. Army officials say Page was first stationed at Fort Still, then Fort Bliss and then Fort Bragg. At Fort Bragg, he was assigned to psychological operations associated with a special operations unit, though was not a special ops trained soldier, officials told NBC News.

Page rose to the rank of?sergeant?while in the Army, but was given a dishonorable discharge in 1998 and reduced in rank to a specialist for acts of misconduct. U.S. officials told NBC News the misconduct was connected to a drinking problem.

Officials say Page had no criminal record in the military and no record of combat deployments.

MySpace, End Apathy

Authorities believe Wade Michael Page is the gunman who killed six people at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin.

He was not being watched by the FBI or any other law enforcement organizations, officials said Monday.

"Nobody knew this guy was a threat," Carlson said.

Carlson said they were examining ties to white supremacist groups and were continuing to locate family and associates.

"We had no reason to believe ...?that he was planning or plotting or capable of such violence," Carlson said.

Members of the local Sikh community said the president of the congregation and a priest were among the victims.?

Jagjit Singh Kaleka, the brother of the president of the temple, who was among the six Sikhs killed, said he had no idea what the motive was for the attack.?

Gunman opens fire at Sikh temple in Wisconsin; 7 dead

Sunday night and early Monday, police searched an apartment at a duplex in the Cudahy neighborhood near Milwaukee where Page apparently lived. Authorities would not say what evidence they found.

The attack came just over two weeks after a gunman killed 12 people at a theater in Aurora, Colorado, where they were watching a screening of new Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises."?

Amardeep Kaleka tells TODAY's Matt Lauer that his community is at a "breaking point" after a gunman opened fire and killed his father and five other faithful inside a Sikh temple in Wisconsin.

American Sikhs said they have often been singled out for harassment, and occasionally violent attack, since the September 11, 2001 attacks because of their colorful turbans and beards.?

The 2001 attacks were carried out by Muslims linked to the al-Qaida militant group led by Osama bin Laden. Sikhs are not Muslim but many Americans do not know the difference, members of the Sikh community said.?

Some witnesses to the Wisconsin shooting said the suspect had a tattoo marking the September 11, 2001 attacks. Authorities confirmed he had tattoos but said they were not sure exactly what the tattoos illustrated.?

There are 500,000 or more Sikhs in the United States but the community in Wisconsin is small, about 2,500 to 3,000 families, said local Sikhs.?

The Sikh faith is the fifth-largest in the world, with more than 30 million followers. It includes belief in one God and that the goal of life is to lead an exemplary existence.?

The temple in Oak Creek was founded in October 1997 and has a congregation of 350 to 400 people.?

"These people were going to church. Two weeks ago, it was people going to a movie. When is it going to end?" said Ray Zirkle, who came from Racine, Wisconsin with his wife to light votive candles near the site of the shooting.?

On Sunday evening, hundreds gathered in downtown?Milwaukee?to hold a vigil of for the victims of the shootings,?The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

Participants stood in a circle, prayed and lit candles at the event held at Cathedral Square, and one-by-one people made unscripted statements to the group, according to the newspaper.?

One man recited "The Lord's Prayer."

"This isn't about the city of Oak Creek, we are all responsible," another said, while a third declared:?"I'm an atheist and I stand behind every peace loving religion," the newspaper reported.

Members of the Sikh community attended the vigil, the Journal reported.?

"It was same as 9/11," Manpreet Kaur, who attended the vigil with her husband and two daughters, told the newspaper. "My mother-in-law and father-in-law thought that it's not safe for you to go in your turban today."?

NBC's Pete Williams, Jim Miklaszewski and Andrew Mach and Reuters contributed to this report.

Only Valentine was fooled, swindled, bamboozled, hoodwinked, take your pick. Valentine found a booking agency, Lund Live, which claimed to work with Petty. After discussing the fee, he paid owner Chris Lund a 50 percent deposit to secure the date ??$165,000.

After multiple failed attempts to reach contacts provided by Lund, Valentine spoke with Petty?s?management, who had never heard of the wedding plans, nor Lund.

After Valentine reported the scam to the FBI, Lund was arrested last week on felony fraud charges.

Luckily this couple still got their happily ever after. Booked through more valid means, Petty played at the July reception.

Because, you know, going to the?management?company first would have just been silly. ?-Kelsey Fowler

Information advantage gained from surprising quantum source

ScienceDaily (Aug. 6, 2012) ? New research lends hope that a phenomenon called quantum discord could be harnessed to bring quantum technologies within easier reach than expected. The work, by an international team, is published on 5 August 2012 in Nature Physics.

Up until a few years ago, researchers thought that realizing quantum technologies would mean harnessing the most difficult-to-tame properties of the quantum world. For example, 'entanglement', the phenomenon referred to by Einstein as spooky-action-at-a-distance, was thought to be a resource required to run a quantum computer. This presents a challenge. In a laboratory setting, entanglement can be protected with near ideal conditions. Outside the lab, however, entanglement is fragile and transient.

But now researchers realize that entanglement may not always be necessary. In the past few years, scientists have discovered examples of technologies that seem to gain a quantum advantage without entanglement. Researchers are left with the question, where does the quantum power come from?

The new research by the National University of Singapore (NUS), The Australian National University (ANU), the University of Queensland and the University of Oxford identifies that quantum discord, a more robust and easy to access phenomenon than entanglement, can also deliver a quantum advantage.

The team in Singapore discovered a direct link between quantum power and quantum discord. "We've shown that quantum discord is a resource that we can tap with the right quantum tools," said Mile Gu, a Research Fellow of the Centre for Quantum Technologies at NUS.

The ANU team encoded information onto laser light to demonstrate the unlocking of this quantum resource. In their experiment, they show that they can retrieve more information by using quantum discord than if the discord is not accessed.

Ping Koy Lam, Professor at ANU, said "the experiment is analogous to decoding music from a AM/FM radio simulcast that is badly affected by static." They found that discord is similar to shared quantum static and that more 'music' can be extracted from this simulcast with the right quantum tools.

Quantum discord has been shown to be present in many systems, and might previously have been characterized as unwanted noise. This has made some scientists skeptical that it could be useful. The new results suggest otherwise. The experiment demonstrated isn't considered a quantum computation, but it shows that discord has potential that can be unlocked for quantum technologies.

Researchers are now looking for other tasks that may be enhanced by quantum discord. The hope is that discord could prove an easier path to future quantum technologies than entanglement. With a scientist's caution, Lam said "our work hints towards the possibility that the requirements on certain quantum technologies could be relaxed."

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean proven carrying rough but working code for multi-user support

If there?s ever been a persistent gripe among families sharing mobile devices, it?s been the absence of multiple user profiles ? hand that iPad or Nexus 7 to Junior and you may have to play a spot-the-differences game when it comes back. Some long overdue testing of previously found code references in Jelly Bean shows that Google, at least, has explored ending that anxiety over who uses the family gadgets. Command-line code in AOSP-based versions of Android 4.1 will let you create a separate guest profile, complete with its own lock screen security, home screen layout and limited settings. To say that the code is unpolished would be an understatement, however. Apps and even some notifications cross over from the main account, which could prove more than a little embarrassing if the hardware is left in the wrong hands. At least it?s easy to revert back, as the instructions (and video after the break) show. The real challenge will be waiting to see when ? or really, if ? Google gets to finishing multi-user code and turns that Nexus 7 into the communal tablet we want it to be.

I walked into the building and I couldn?t take my eyes off the many young people working on various machines. They seemed to take on every challenge with little effort.

The receptionist raised her voice to get my attention. She was quick to let me know that the physical therapy section was on the other side. ?Make a left and go through that door. It?s a handicapped door for your convenience. It will open automatically.?

I thought, ?Thanks for reminding me.? It?s annoying and humiliating when people call attention to your handicap.

?This side is the health club,? she said.

?Enough already lady,? I thought. I get it.

My doctor prescribed physical therapy three times a week. I sat in the outer room waiting for my turn to start working on the answer to my problems. I stared through the clear glass walls that separated the physical therapy side from the health club; I longed to be one of those people in the health club.

I could hear my doctor?s words replaying in my mind. ?Physical therapy will not only strengthen your legs, but it will help with your walking and balance.?

Why me? I was a dancer, a dance teacher; I walked everywhere.?Now I was reduced to the hope that maybe I could walk better.

I completed six agonizing weeks of physical therapy and asked my therapist if I could join the health club. She said I could but warned me that it would not be easy. Great. I was determined to be one of those people I envied in the health club.

I limped through the entrance and looked around at the toned, fit men and women. I had self-doubt. I wanted the whole place to myself. I didn?t want anyone staring at me and was convinced everyone was.

As I struggled with a weight machine, an older woman came up to me.? Oh good, there were older people here.

She said, ?How old are you??

?How old do you think I am?? I replied.

?Well, you?re probably in your fifties. But if you colored your hair to get the gray out, you could look ten years younger.?

?Well, thanks for the compliment,? I said.

She was dumbfounded by my response. She had no clue why I was thanking her.?She didn?t know that I was in my early sixties. By telling me I could look ten years younger merely by coloring my hair, she implied I could look as if I was in my forties.

There?s no doubt about it, people can say the strangest (insensitive) things. Ironically, this woman actually did me a favor. Her comment boosted my quest for agility. It?s never too late.
