Google Releases Jelly Bean, The New Version Of Android, And That Means You Can Get It Soon (GOOG)

Google will release the full, open source Android 4.1 Jelly Bean today, which likely means we?re very close to the official release on a few phones and tablets.

The news comes from aGoogle Groups postbyJean-Baptiste M. Queru, the technical lead for the Android Open Source project. (ViaThe Verge.)

Today?s release is part of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), which lets anyone download the Android operating system and tweak it. Google allowed a few manufacturers early access to Jelly Bean so they could get a head start porting it to their devices.

When Google announced Jelly Bean at its i/o developers conference two weeks ago, it said the new operating system would be available for the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, and the Motorola Xoom. The Nexus 7 tablet will come with Jelly Bean out of the box.

If you have another device like Samsung?s Galaxy S III or HTC?s One X, you?ll likely have to wait a few months to get the update.
